GETTY UNSHUTTERED
Getty Unshuttered was an annual Immersive Projection Exhibit Directed and Curated By Mike Patterson and Candace Reckinger with over 3000 attendees. We use projection mapping in more than 10 buildings and a rock fountain at The Getty Unshuttered to bring the Museum to live in a night full of music and color.
At the core of the Getty Unshuttered event is the work young photographers that are featured in a rotating gallery show inside the Getty Center with an exhibit that las edition was open to the public for more than 6 months.

How to use animation and projection mapping to enhance a uniquely iconic architecture?
1.
What are the components of a bespoke tool to run a unique show?
2.
How to create a digital gallery experience that elevates the creators work and enhances the participants experience?
3.
A MUSEUM BEYOND THE MUSEUM WALLS
Doing Projection Mapping and creating content for the emblematic architecture of the Getty Center posed unique design and creative challenges. We wanted to make sure the experience was not only a show of color and technical skill, but a real celebration of life and creativity.
DESIGNING MOTION FOR THE INFINITE CANVAS
Designing animation for Projection Mapping is a unique challenge: The Motion Design should both highlight the architecture and expand it. The design choices behind the Getty Unshuttered work sought to highlight the work of the young photographers of the program as well as creating a new magical space using the museum courtyard as a canvas.
As I worked with these ideas in mind, three design decisions were tenets on the success of the content creation:
-
Bright and colorful animation with high contrast
-
High texture designs to hide the buildings
-
3D designs that take the shape and textures of the buildings and rocks to create the illusion of dimensionality and depth
UNIQUE TOOLS FOR A UNIQUE SPACE
The Getty Unshuttered II show was designed as big visual music immersive piece. That meant fraction-of-a second perfect synchronization was a must.
The system, designed by me, Jordan Halsey and Shaoyu Shi, ran 5 High-definition videos across 5 different screens, projected using 14K Projectors.
In designing the system, we decided to use a mix of Real-time and pre-rendered content running from TouchDesigner. We synched two computers using NDI and ran 2 of the main projectors, aimed at the Getty Rotunda, from one computer, and the other 3 from a second, synched computer one.
The last part of the show was the creation of the Selfie Spots: Areas across the courtyard with Projection Mapping designed to be used as dynamic selfie backgrounds running from Brightspace players.
A DYNAMIC GALLERY
At the core of the Getty Unshuttered event is the photography work created by the young artists that every year join the program.
In 2019, Jill Moniz, Curator of the UnShuttered program and Erik Bertelloti, head of interpretative content of The Getty, reached out because they wanted to do something in the gallery that matched the projection mapping show impact and innovation.
In close collaboration with with them and the rest of the museum staff, I designed and deployed a virtual, automated gallery that cycled through the young artists' photographs. This approach allowed for bigger-scale displays and created more engagement from the public. The show's success led to a four-month extension, only ending when the museum closed due to Covid-19

A PARALLEL PRODUCTION
The Getty Unshuttered production employed a multifaceted design approach, skillfully merging various design elements to provide an immersive experience for the audience. First, the Projection Mapping Technical Design focused on delivering an optimal visual presentation during the event. Second, the Animation Design team developed captivating visuals tailored to enhance the projection mapping experience. Finally, the design and implementation of the Virtual Gallery served as the centerpiece of the event and the entire Getty Unshuttered Program.
